Key Technical Features of the MECS® DynaWave® Reverse Jet Scrubbing Technology
The DynaWave® reverse jet scrubbing technology is an airborne emission control technology. It is a wet scrubbing process with some unique features:
1. Multiple functions are combined in one unit:
- Hot gas quenching – DynaWave® scrubbers can handle inlet temperatures up to 1200°C /2200°F, offering extra operational comfort and reliability.
- Acid absorption – the guaranteed low acid emission levels often translate into lower stack height requirements and thus CAPEX savings.
- Particulates removal – the large nozzles and open vessel design make the unit virtually unpluggable and able to handle high solid levels. This results in higher on-stream time and lower maintenance and operational expenditures.
- In-situ oxidation – The chemical oxygen demand (COD) is reduced, so that the effluent is completely converted into sulfates, making further treatment of the effluent easier.
- The combination of these functions into one vessel allows for a smaller footprint, lower CAPEX involvement and increased operational comfort.
2. Liquid is injected countercurrent to the gas, creating the “froth zone” in an inlet barrel upstream of the separation vessel. This enables:
- A high liquid-to-gas ratio, which results in the capability to handle high inlet acid levels and to large turndown on acid removal. This flexibility, both in terms of variable flow and changing acid concentrations, adds to the ease of operation and the system’s on-stream time.
- The use of high-alloy material is limited to the inlet barrel, thus saving on investment cost.
- No requirement for packing sections, resulting in lower height and smaller diameter of the vessel, which translates into lower equipment cost. It furthermore increases equipment reliability in case of particulate entrainment, as there is no blocking potential.
3. DynaWave® technology can work with a variety of reagents, including:
Caustic scrubbing, lime(stone) scrubbing, ammonia scrubbing, peroxide scrubbing, magnesium hydroxide, zinc oxide, seawater and many others and can therefore generate different kinds of solid/liquid effluent/byproduct, depending on site-specific convenience. This can be key to optimizing operational costs.
4. Minimal control instrumentation for simple and reliable operation.
How the DynaWave® Wet Gas Scrubber Works
The key is the intimate mixing of the gas and scrubbing liquid in the inlet barrel. The DynaWave® reverse jet scrubber is an open duct in which scrubbing liquid is injected, through a non-restrictive reverse jet nozzle, counter current to the dirty inlet gas.
Gas enters at the top of the vessel and travels down the inlet barrel while the liquid is sprayed upward into the barrel. The liquid collides with the down-flowing gas to create the “Froth Zone,” a region of extreme turbulence with a high rate of mass transfer.
The clean, water-saturated gas continues through the scrubber vessel to mist removal devices. The liquid reverses direction and returns to the vessel sump for recycling back to the reverse jet nozzle.

DynaWave® technology has been used to clean small gas flows from a couple of cubic meters per minute to flows well above one million cubic meters per hour. It has treated gases up to 1200°C / 2200°F.
